South Africa’s traditional leaders have declared Saturday, 8 May Ancestors’ Day, a celebration and commemoration honouring the teachings and learnings of the ancients. And a recognition of African spirituality.
All of us can take the time on a day like this to honour our own heritage passed down by our own leaders and teachers.
The ALSTAR would like to share its reflections on this day:
To our ancestors
Our ancestors are the stars in heaven,
Risen through the veils of life on earth,
Whose hearts live in our ability to practise the wisdom they taught us.
Where the shimmering echoes through all of us,
The steps they have taken for us to be here and now.
See that your legacy and the virtues of love are honoured and treasured,
In respectful ways and living.
Imagine seeing all they have seen.
All they have lived.
The moments of courage,
The choices that defined their lives.
Pearls now.
Neither the shell of the body nor oceans that shape the form,
But refined souls watching over us,
Always, in always.
When we listen quietly to our hearts
We hear their whispers of knowledge guiding us.
If we hear the thunder of all of their heart beats in our hearts,
We can be gifted with their eternal love.
